Prayer and Superman
I grew up on comic books. Superman and Batman go as far back as the 1930’s while Spiderman along with the X-men were born in the 1960’s just a few years after I was. Yup, they are that old.
When thinking of superheroes the word boldness comes to mind. And when thinking of the word bold superheroes come to mind. To be bold is to take risks, to be confident, courageous and unashamed.
Often when we think of prayer words like piety, reverence, solemnity and even silence come to mind, rarely the word boldness. Yet Jesus tells us of a story about a man who needed bread for his visiting friend. Since he did not have any he decided to ask his neighbor who was already tucked in bed.
We pick the story up in Luke 11:7:
“Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
What this man was asking for was not a matter of life and death, it was just bread for a visitor. Truth is he was bothering his neighbor who was already in bed. Also the door was already locked.
Jesus was telling His disciples that when faced with timidity and a feeling of inadequacy, when you think what you want is just a nuisance and too small a deal for God, when doors are locked and the there seems to be no way …. Its time.... not just to pray but to PRAY with……BOLDNESS.
I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. Luke 11:8
So the next time you pray. Think Superman, Batman or even Spiderman. Be confident, courageous and unashamed. Be bold when you pray!

I am so encouraged by this blog. There are times that I feel that what I will ask God for is just a nuissance. When what I should do is ask and pray. After all He is God. Who am I to assume His thoughts and ways. My resolve is to be confident, courageous and unashamed in prayer.
